The Mexican festival of the dead, Día de los Muertos, is a time to honor one’s ancestors and relatives who have recently passed away. Antepasados (Ancestors) seeks to join the living with memories of those they cherish. In this piece, whose original version is painted entirely in aged wine and ink, Gilat Ben-Dor brings intensity to this symbolism in the form of a passionate woman lost in thought, displaying traditional skull-and-floral ornamentation and a cascading crown of roses. Who is she…one of the living, or one of the antepasados?
“It’s no accident that I’ve used aged wine. Aging is wisdom. Time may pass through us, but it carries with it so many memories, lessons, and hopefully with it all, love.” - Gilat Ben-Dor
NOTE: ORIGINAL IS AVAILABLE. The original wine and ink version of this piece is currently available, framed, through Art House Centro Gallery in Tucson, Arizona. Please email Mark at arthouse.centro@gmail.com to inquire.
