Soulmates - Original Judaic Painting by Gilat Ben-Dor
In SOULMATES, Gilat Ben-Dor combines textures and materials to form physically what love forms metaphorically: Beauty and entanglement, understanding and exploration through depth and layers of meaning that continue to develop.
She applied thin sheets of silver leaf over a textured plane, and embedded iridescent glass beads over a sea of black, to create a different experience from every angle, every different hour of light — just like no two days with a soulmate are ever the same. The flecks of copper leaf in the woman’s hair indicate that this is an otherworldly bond between these two souls, as they meld into one.
The white text is an excerpt from a Hebrew love poem known as “Dodi Li.” Often recited or sung at weddings to a now-famous melody, Dodi Li’s signature line states, ”I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.”
Soulmates is one of two works currently exhibited virtually with GPEC (Greater Phoenix Economic Council) through March 2022, and is available for purchase.
